LYNSAE MOON (SHE/HER)

  • Community | Yellowknife

I am a queer, pagan, femme who recently relocated to Somba K'e, home of Yellowknife’s Dene First Nation, Mǫwhì Gogha Dè Nı̨ ı̨ tłèè, Inuit & Métis. Born a settler, mostly of Celtic descent, I was raised in the prairies. I have spent most of my life living, learning, and playing in treaties six and eight, spending a lot of time immersed in both Métis and Cree cultures, teachings, and practices.

I am passionate about People and Planet, Black Liberation, and Indigenous Sovereignty. I lead with my heart and am keen on making the world a better place by creating and holding space, especially for those pushed to the side and/or silenced by oppressive colonial systems.

I became passionate about birth work through the pregnancy and delivery of my first child in 2004. Once I learned about Doulas and birth support, I became captivated by this work. Following my first birth, I attended DONA certified Doula training at Grant MacEwan. I was privileged to attend many births over a handful of years varying from at home to hospital, natural to cesarean, pregnancy loss to termination, and everything in between. I became immersed in birth politics, assisting new parents, offering breastfeeding support with Le Leche League, and was alongside many other activists fighting hard for midwifery funding and education in Alberta.

Eventually life led me to a place where I chose to step back from being a Doula and focus on raising my two babies as a single parent. Once I reentered the work world, I made my way through the hospitality industry eventually owning and operating my own cafe in Edmonton's inner city. THE nook CAFE was the vessel that allowed me to more fully live out my values by creating an open space of belonging, setting an example of socially active business while serving my community with mutual aid and advocacy. Prior to having wee ones, I was a certified nurse aide working privately and also spent several years as a nanny.

Through this hodge podge of ventures and roles, I have gained an abundance of skills allowing me to offer support in a wide range of circumstances. I have spent the past decade deep diving into the relationship between love and grief and learning to hold the two in tandem. I have yearned to return to birth work and I am looking to expand grief and loss support in my Doula practice.

I have experienced four pregnancies in this lifetime, naturally birthing two beautiful babes, (one in hospital and one at home), also miscarriage and termination. I spent the better part of my thirties in queer partnership trying to conceive with the help of professionals to no avail. I believe my own pregnancy and fertility journeys provide me diverse, real life experience to draw from while serving my clients.

Outside of empowered birthing, my interests include healing through nature, adventuring, nurturing intentional relationships, and spiritual practices. I am an activist and community organizer who lives Queer resistance, believes in Land Back, and works to dismantle colonial capitalist systems. I am a mum dedicated to raising healthy kiddos through a compassionate harm reduction lense. I live in partnership in a little apartment, full of music, laughter, tears, cuddles, dreams, fur babies and a whole lot of love. And I can't wait to meet you and give you a cozy hug. xo
