ALLYSA FELIX (SHE/THEY)

  • Birthworker
  • Steering Committee Member

Akaana! My name is Allysa Felix, also known as Navaluk, and I’m honored to be on the Steering Committee with NBC.

I’m originally from Tuktoyaktuk but now call Inuvik home. I come from a family with deep artistic roots and strong matriarchal influences, which I hold close to my heart. My grandfather, an incredible artist, gave me my Inuvialuktun name. A small but meaningful detail: due to the impacts of colonialism, my last name should technically be Nuyaviak. The government had trouble pronouncing it, so they gave my family the last name Felix instead.

Through my training with the Northern Birthwork Collective as a Cornerstone Doula, I’ve developed a deep passion for providing support to those in need, particularly through the Abortion Support Program. I offer both physical and emotional support to individuals before, during, and after an abortion, as well as assisting during pregnancy, birth, and postnatal care. I also provide support for families who have experienced the heartbreaking loss of a pregnancy, infant, or child. Every person’s needs are different, and I work to customize my care to meet them where they are.

As a 2Spirit, queer, and genderfluid individual living in the North, my journey is unique and often challenging. Living in smaller communities where homophobia and transphobia can be more pronounced can sometimes make it difficult to find a sense of belonging. Still, I know there are many people out there who are supportive and understanding.

I feel immense pride in being Inuk, and it’s my belief that creating a safe space and using inclusive language for vulnerable Native youth is vital. I also work to provide care that’s sensitive to past traumas, using both scientific knowledge and traditional practices—especially when it comes to environmental and animal protection. After all, our land is our future, and we can’t have one without the other.

In addition to my advocacy work, I have a few personal passions that bring me joy: beading, reading and writing, painting, and spending time by the water and on the land. These activities allow me to express myself and find peaceful moments in a busy life. I’m truly excited to be part of this committee and to collaborate with all of you to offer the services and values of the Northern Birthwork Collective to our communities. Quyanainni!
